The Baltimore Orioles are strengthening their outfield by signing veteran outfielder Leody Taveras to a one-year contract worth $2 million, as first reported by MLB insider Mike Rodriguez on Wednesday evening. Jon Heyman of the New York Post also confirmed this signing.
Taveras, 27, began his professional career with the Texas Rangers after signing as an international free agent in 2015. He made his major league debut in 2020 and was part of the Rangers' roster that won the 2023 World Series, despite going 0-for-16 during the Fall Classic.
During the most recent season, Taveras split time in center field alongside Kevin Pillar. He posted a .241/.259/.342 batting line with one home run, eight RBIs, and six stolen bases over 30 games with Texas. On May 4, the Rangers placed him on outright waivers, and two days later, the Seattle Mariners claimed him.
"In his first game with the Mariners on May 7 against the Athletics, Taveras started in right field for the first time in his career, drove in the tying run, and scored the go-ahead run in a 6-5 victory."
In 28 games with Seattle, he batted .174/.198/. .
The Orioles add a versatile outfielder with major league experience and championship pedigree to provide depth and flexibility in their lineup for the upcoming season.
