A 35-year-old man deliberately drove into a group of pedestrians and cyclists on Île d’Oléron, resulting in 10 injuries, four of which are critical.
The attack took place around 8:45 a.m. between Dolus-d’Oléron and Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron. Witnesses reported that the driver shouted
“Allahu Akbar”before accelerating into the crowd.
Following the collision, the suspect attempted to set his car on fire by using gas cylinders, but was quickly subdued by police with a taser and taken into custody without further resistance.
The prosecutor stated,
“He was neutralized using an electric pulse weapon.”Authorities confirmed that the man was already known for minor theft offenses but was not on the high-risk 'S' watchlist.
An investigation has been launched into attempted murder with terrorist intent.
The deliberate vehicle attack on Île d’Oléron resulted in serious injuries and prompted a swift police response, highlighting ongoing concerns about lone-wolf acts of terrorism.
