UF’s Olivier Rioux Makes Historic College Basketball Debut

Olivier Rioux, standing 7-foot-9, made his highly anticipated debut for the University of Florida against North Florida, becoming the tallest player ever in college basketball history.

During the Gators' commanding 104-64 victory at the O’Connell Center, a crowd of 10,065 fans enthusiastically chanted, “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the world’s tallest teenager and fan favorite, despite him not playing since arriving in the summer of 2024.

Rioux’s First Appearance and Reactions

With UF leading 102-61 and just over two minutes remaining, Coach Todd Golden responded to the cheers by putting Rioux on the court. The 19-year-old Canadian described the moment:

“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”

Although Rioux did not record a score or rebound, his appearance set a new record by surpassing 7-foot-7 Kenny George, who played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.
