Three inmates have been charged with the murder of Kyle Bevan, who was found dead in his cell at HMP Wakefield on Wednesday, November 5. The men — Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 56, and David Taylor, 63 — appeared separately via video link at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Friday.
All three defendants were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear again at Leeds Crown Court on Monday. Each was dressed in a grey tracksuit during the brief hearings, which lasted just over a minute each.
“Absolutely not. I'm innocent.” — David Taylor
Fellows and Newell spoke only to confirm their names, birth dates, and that they understood the proceedings. District Judge Charlotte Holland ordered their continued detention ahead of a pre-trial preparation hearing set for Monday.
Kyle Bevan was serving a life sentence, with a minimum term of 28 years, for the murder of his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James. In April 2023, Bevan was found guilty of inflicting fatal head injuries on the child during a prolonged attack at their home in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, in 2020.
