Cancer patients face an additional challenge beyond their disease: battling the healthcare system. A new study published in the journal JCO Oncology Practice reveals that half of cancer patients who required prior insurance authorization for their care had to personally involve themselves in the process.
This involvement, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Quality Care Symposium in Chicago, leads to treatment delays, financial strain, and personal stress, potentially affecting survival odds.
"Cancer patients and their families are being pulled into the insurance prior authorization process, at the expense of their time, health and well-being,"
said lead researcher Alexandra Zaleta, Vice President of Research and Insights at CancerCare.
