Local tap dancers Madeline and Luke Scrase proudly represented South Africa at the International Dance Organisation (IDO) World Tap Dance Championships in Prague, Czechia. The event took place at the Unyp Arena from October 22 to 25, attracting 1,700 dancers from 21 countries.
The Scrase siblings, along with Madison Versveld from Kempton Park, brought home two bronze medals and a silver, flying the South African flag high on the global stage.
Madeline, a multiple finalist who previously won silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023, earned a bronze medal in the adult female solo category among 45 competitors, securing the title of second vice-world champion.
“Madeline secured a bronze medal in the adult female solo category, becoming the second vice-world champion.”
Luke and Versveld claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the adult male solo category, earning the titles of vice and second vice world champions. This marked the first time South Africa had two solo finalists who both made the podium in this competition.
Madeline and Luke also placed sixth in the adult duo category, the first South African duo to reach the finals in 14 years.
Versveld captured the audience with a win in the “battle of the feet” contest, a freestyle dance-off where dancers improvise to a judge-given tempo in front of a live audience.
“Versveld concluded a remarkable competition by clinching the battle of the feet contest.”
South Africa’s tap dancers achieved historic success at the 2023 IDO World Championships, setting new standards for the country with multiple podium finishes and groundbreaking final appearances.
