Inside Selhurst: How engineers rebuilt 300 Electrostar trains without sending a single one off-site

Refurbishment of Electrostar Trains

A £100 million project to refurbish over 300 Electrostar trains has been completed by Govia Thameslink (GTR) staff at the Selhurst depot.

The project, which took five years to complete, is believed to be the largest fleet upgrade in modern times and was carried out entirely in-house by GTR staff.

Train overhauls typically involve four main companies: the train builder, the train owners, the train operator, and the maintenance company.

In this case, GTR decided to bring the job in-house, using the existing Selhurst depot to carry out the work.

The project was unusual in that all the work was carried out in-house by GTR staff rather than a third-party refurbishment company.

The refurbished trains will be used across the GTR network, which includes Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern, and Gatwick Express.
