Federal government programs that support vulnerable populations are facing significant challenges due to the ongoing shutdown. A key concern is the dwindling funds for critical nutrition programs, such as WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program.
The WIC program, which supports over 6 million pregnant women, mothers, and their children, received a temporary reprieve with an infusion of $300 million from tariff revenues to cover essential aid, including food and formula.
"Regular federal funding is running out for the WIC program. The United States Department of Agriculture has said that they can cover a short-term lapse in funding through the end of this month. So in other words, for the next two plus weeks,"
according to Jamie Bussell, a senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The situation highlights the urgent need for a solution to ensure continued support for these critical programs.
