Big Batteries Boom in Australia
Australia has become the third-largest market worldwide for large-scale energy storage by capacity.
The country is leading in per capita battery storage installations, with more than 1 GWh per million people, double that of the United Kingdom.
In 2025, Australia surpassed the UK to become the third-largest market for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) globally, behind China and the US.
- Australia now hosts 14 GW/37 GWh of battery projects at or nearing financial close.
- The pipeline of battery projects jumped 45 GW in 12 months, from 109 GW in August 2024 to 154 GW one year later.
Australia is the first nation to surpass 1 GWh of utility battery capacity per million people, far ahead of China and the US.
