The US government shutdown has become the longest on record, surpassing 35 days. The Senate failed to pass a short-term spending bill to reopen the government for the 14th time.
Despite the lack of progress, lawmakers from both parties continue to float potential deals. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) expressed hope that bipartisan negotiators are "close" to reaching a deal.
"I think there are people who realize this has gone on long enough, and there's been enough pain inflicted on the American people and it's time to end it,"
Thune said, acknowledging the "cross-pressures" felt by lawmakers. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also weighed in on the issue.
