First and Last Bakery, LLC of Hartford, Connecticut, is recalling select tomato sauce products due to a potential risk of botulism, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled sauces are packaged in 26-ounce jars with a use-by date of September 2026. These items were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through the Big Y supermarket chain and possibly other retailers between September 22 and October 28.
The FDA states the tomato sauces were "manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate." Improperly processed acidified or low-acid canned foods can permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism.
