Peter Thornton’s persistent effort over eight months to deliver excellent meals to his shipmates and mentor junior chefs has earned him the title of RFA Chef of the Year, along with the honor of meeting The Duke of Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh presented the chief petty officer with his title – and the glass trophy which goes with it – when he joined Royal Fleet Auxiliary sailors and veterans at their 120th birthday celebrations in Portsmouth earlier this month.
Originally from South Shields, Thornton has served 34 years in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, a key part of Royal Navy operations that provides fuel, food, and essential supplies to front-line warships around the world.
The senior rating received special recognition for his service aboard the aviation training and medical support vessel RFA Argus during its 2024 Littoral Response Group (South) deployment, reaching as far as Australia and returning via West Africa. He worked two consecutive tours at sea to ensure high-quality catering throughout the mission.
During this time, he managed to keep over 400 sailors and Royal Marines well fed with a nutritious and varied menu while displaying remarkable leadership and mentoring abilities that deeply impressed his superiors.
Peter Thornton’s enduring commitment, exceptional cooking, and support for his fellow chefs made him the standout choice for RFA Chef of the Year 2024.
