Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin will be stepping away from the team temporarily, as announced by head coach Lindy Ruff on Friday.
Dahlin will return to his home country, Sweden, to attend to a personal matter. There is no current timeline for his return to play.
“Rasmus will be taking a temporary leave of absence to deal with a personal matter back in Sweden,” Ruff said. “I will say this, he said everything is ok, and through this he’s got the full support by our team.”
Ruff expressed empathy and support for Dahlin during this difficult time.
“I don’t think you can feel what he’s feeling. I’m pretty passionate about the fact that no one would want to walk in his shoes and have dealt with what he dealt with. He has, undoubtedly, got the support of everybody on this.
Family and person come before hockey. Hockey is our job, hockey is our lifeline, but family and personal trump anything that comes before.”
According to The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn, Dahlin will be with his fiancée in Sweden. She recently underwent a heart transplant after health issues this past summer.
The organization fully supports Dahlin during his time away, and his fiancée’s condition is reported to be stable.
Summary: Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin is on a temporary leave to support his fiancée recovering from a heart transplant, with full backing from the team and no set return date.
