Daniel Owen, 47, and his son Cooper, 15, died after being attacked by a swarm of Asian giant hornets, also known as murder hornets, while descending from a tree during a zipline tour last month.
The father and son were vacationing at Green Jungle Park, an adventure resort near Luang Prabang, Laos. After the attack, they were initially treated at a small clinic before being moved to a nearby hospital, where they passed away several hours later.
"They had a lot of stings, more than 100, over the whole body. I thought already that it’s a very dangerous situation because I had never seen it as bad as that," said Phanomsay Phakan, a doctor at the Phakan Arocavet Clinic.
Daniel Owen was the director of the QSI International School in Haiphong, Vietnam, where his son Cooper was a student. The school released a statement on Facebook:
"Dan dedicated 18 years to QSI, serving in five different schools and touching countless lives with his warmth, leadership, and unwavering commitment to education."
Green Jungle Park expressed condolences and announced it has reviewed all its safety procedures following the tragic incident.
The fatal attack by a swarm of Asian giant hornets during a ziplining adventure claimed the lives of a father and son, highlighting the dangers of encounters with these insects and prompting a review of safety measures at the resort.
