Buffalo Sabres captain and star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is stepping away from the team, announced head coach Lindy Ruff. There is no set timeline for his return.
According to The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn, Dahlin is returning to Sweden, his home country, to support his fiancée Carolina Matovac. In September, the couple revealed that Matovac had a heart transplant over the summer after a serious health scare while traveling in Europe.
"This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives," Dahlin said, expressing thanks to those who supported them.
Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reported that Ruff told the media, “things are going well” with Matovac, but emphasized the importance of allowing Dahlin to take time away. Ruff added that Dahlin has “got the support of everyone on this” and that “this is bigger than hockey.”
Dahlin remains one of the Sabres’ key players, serving as captain, their top defenseman, and leading defensive scorer. With Dahlin absent, coaches will likely rely more on Bowen Byram and Owen Power.
Rasmus Dahlin is on an indefinite leave to support his fiancée’s recovery from a heart transplant, with the Sabres preparing other defensemen to fill in during his absence.
